Port Stephens is the ideal spot for your romantic weekend away with the most secluded spots and fantastic restaurants or maybe you just want to kick back and enjoy the scenery. If the family vacation is more your thing than Nelson Bay offers a range of Accommodation options from camping to holiday rentals. Complete realty in Anna bay has a huge range of houses flats and units to suit most people
You can go to any beach and see people enjoying their lifestyles and the beautiful beaches. just off Birubi we are watching a couple of surfers carve up the surf with huge smiles on their faces. Newcastle city is in the distance and we can see the light house just starting to come on.The sand dunes stretch into the distance as the sun sets. A bit eerie really, you wouldn't know you were so close to a town. We are totally surprised to see camels coming wandering out of the sand dunes and sit down behind a line of concrete pyramids at the command of the drivers
The dunes at Stockton Beach are the largest within the southern hemisphere, at some points reaching greater than 47 metres into the blue skies and extending a kilometre inland as they disappear into the horizon. Most beaches are losing sand but Stockton keeps growing at an ever increasing pace.
The valleys in the sand dunes and the continual movement cover a mor rugged past. We have seen many old Aboriginal dwellings and middens and come across the tin sheds the fisherman used to use many moons ago. the pyramids turn out to be left over remnants of the 2nd world war to stop a Japanese invasion of tanks.. To drive on the beaches all it takes is a permit from the local service station, and you can enjoy the journey along the beach.
Port Stephens 4WD Excursions takes in all these sights as the knowledgeable guide pulls knowledge from the sand like an archaeologist. Then he shifts gears and with a wry smile says. ''Have you got your seat belt on?''
''Is there a reason you're asking?'' a passenger asks with panic, moments before we drop down the side of a mountainous dune. I come across that small child inside me screaming with excitement and again as we cease to repeat the descent on little greater than a plank of wood.
By the time we reach the famous shipwreck further down the beach - the Norwegian Sygna that washed up in 1974 - both adult and inner child have found what they had been in search of.
There are many fascinating things to see and do in the Nelson Bay Port Stephens area, to much to list here. Do your self a favour and go and visit the area you'll be glad you did.
